the Institute of Ismaili Studies
The Institute of Ismaili Studies commissioned an original hand-scripted artwork by Mehrdad Shoghii, delicately finished with gold leaf. The Institute charged us with creating a limited edition print run that stayed true to the original. The challenge was reproducing the gold leaf without losing its brilliance or detail.
Standard scanning and printing methods wouldn’t cut it. So, we:
- Commissioned a colour-accurate, high-res scan
- Digitally removed thousands of gold flecks
- Giclée printed the script-only artwork on textured uncoated stock
- Created a foiling artwork to replicate the gold leaf
- Developed a textured die to mimic the original finish
- Applied the gold foil to the giclée prints- Digitally printed individually numbered backs on carefully matched stock, duplexing them to the giclée fronts
The result was a stunningly faithful reproduction, fusing hands-on craftsmanship with contemporary digital methods, made possible by Metro Imaging, K&L Laminators, Tomlinson die makers, and L&S Printing.
